What is MarkLogic Server?
MarkLogic Server is the industry’s leading XML server. It provides the agility needed to build and deploy next-generation content applications. Designed specifically for XML, it combines the capabilities of a database management system, a search engine, and an application server to store, manage, and deliver information.
MarkLogic Server provides a powerful platform on which developers can build rich content applications. Like a search engine, MarkLogic Server does not impose structural constraints on the documents it manages. Content can be loaded and efficiently queried without normalization in advance. Like a relational database, MarkLogic Server provides developers with highly scalable storage and a standards-based programming interface based on a full implementation of the W3C XQuery 1.0 Recommendation.

MarkLogic Server Editions
MarkLogic Server comes in two editions, Standard and Enterprise, and several licensing options. Features are enabled by the appropriate license key. Upgrading is a simple matter of updating the license key and restarting—no re-installation is required.
Standard Edition
The Standard Edition is limited in the amount of content it can store and is restricted to a single server with no more than 2 CPUs.
Enterprise Edition
The Enterprise Edition can be configured to run in a distributed environment with multiple servers and any number of CPUs per server to efficiently scale to terabytes of information.
Upgrading from Standard Edition to Enterprise Edition does not require a re-installation but you may need to configure the newly activated enterprise features.
